Is IPTV Legal in Ireland? Plain Facts on the Technology and the Law
Is IPTV legal in Ireland? IPTV is simply TV over the internet, and the technology itself is legal and widely used. Here's what Irish law actually covers, what a Firestick is, and how privacy and VPNs fit in, in plain English.

Is IPTV legal in Ireland? What's the short answer?
Yes, IPTV as a technology is legal in Ireland. Sky, Virgin Media, Eir and RTÉ all deliver TV over the internet this way.
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television: channels sent over broadband instead of a dish or aerial. Apps, players, Firesticks and smart TVs that play IPTV are ordinary products sold in Irish shops. The legal questions people ask are really about content: who owns the rights to a channel, and who is allowed to sell it. The sections below explain how Irish law handles that.
What's the difference between IPTV technology and the content?
There are two separate things: how the TV reaches you, and who owns what's on it.
1. The technology
IPTV is a delivery method, like satellite or cable. Using an IPTV app or device is no different from using any other streaming app.
2. The content
Sports, films and channels are owned by rights holders, who sell broadcast rights to TV companies. Copyright law protects those rights.
Big providers such as Sky Stream, Virgin TV, Eir TV and the RTÉ Player all use IPTV. So the technology is never the issue; copyright law is about the content and how it's sold.
What does the Copyright Act say about IPTV in Ireland?
The main law is the Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000. Its criminal offences focus on people who sell, distribute or make copyright works available as a business.
Section 140 covers acts such as selling infringing copies, making them available to the public in the course of a business, and supplying devices or services that get around copy protection. Watching at home is not listed as an offence in that section. The maximum penalty for those offences, on conviction on indictment, is a fine of up to €130,000, up to five years in prison, or both (amended in 2019). Rights holders can also bring civil claims, which is a separate route from criminal law.

Is a Firestick illegal in Ireland? And what's a "dodgy box"?
No, a Firestick is not illegal in Ireland. It's an ordinary Amazon device sold in Irish shops, and the same goes for Android boxes and player apps.
"Dodgy box" is a newspaper term, not a legal one. It's used for a device or subscription set up to show paid channels without the rights holders' permission. There is no separate "dodgy box law" in Ireland; any legal question comes back to copyright law and the content, never to the device itself.
Can my broadband provider see IPTV, and does a VPN help?
Without a VPN, your broadband provider can see which servers you connect to and how much data you use. With a VPN, it only sees an encrypted connection to the VPN.
A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts your internet traffic, which is good for privacy on any service: your provider can't see what you stream. Every IPTV Pass includes a built-in VPN, even the free trial, so there's nothing extra to install or pay for. Be clear on one thing: a VPN protects your privacy online, but it doesn't change copyright law or what the law allows.
What is FACT?
FACT is the Federation Against Copyright Theft, a UK-based organisation that works for rights holders on copyright matters.
You'll see its name in news stories about TV piracy in Ireland and the UK. It is a private body acting for its members, not a police force or a court.
What other ways are there to watch TV in Ireland?

Tap a question.
Is it illegal to watch streams in Ireland?
Streaming itself is legal and part of everyday life. The criminal offences in the Copyright Act focus on selling and distributing content as a business, not on watching at home; civil copyright claims are a separate matter. For your own situation, ask a solicitor.
Is IPTV legal with a VPN?
A VPN is legal in Ireland and keeps your browsing and streaming private from your broadband provider. It doesn't change copyright law either way; it changes how your connection travels, not who owns the content.
Is a Firestick illegal in Ireland?
No. A Firestick is an ordinary Amazon device sold in Irish shops. What matters legally is content and copyright, not the device.
Does IPTV Pass include a VPN?
Yes. Every pass includes a built-in VPN for privacy, including the free trial, with nothing extra to install.
Can my broadband provider see what I watch?
Without a VPN, it can see which servers you connect to and how much data you use. With a VPN, it sees only an encrypted connection to the VPN.
